International Society for the Performing Arts’ Canadian Fellowship Program
The Canadian Fellowship Program gives emerging and mid-career Canadian professionals in the performing arts an opportunity to build leadership skills and connect with leaders in their field from around the world. The Canada Council for the Arts has partnered with the International Society for the Performing Arts (ISPA) on this important initiative since 2011. The 2019-2021 Canadian Fellows are the third cohort to benefit from this partnership.
[The fellowships are] an essential tool not only to build connections among emerging and mid-career leaders around the world, but also to transform the very nature of our sector, and what and who it represents.
Marcus Youssef, 2016-2018 Canadian Fellow
The 2019-21 Canadian ISPA Fellows
We are proud to support the fellows for the 2019-21 Canadian ISPA Fellowship program. These participants will spent three years engaging in the development and exchange of ideas with leaders from some of the world's most significant presenting organizations, performing arts centres, artist management agencies, cultural policy groups, foundations and more.

About ISPA’s Canadian Fellowship Program
ISPA’s Canadian Fellowship brings together a cohort of Canadian arts professionals, representing diverse practices, to participate in the ISPA network for a three year period. With support from the Canada Council for the Arts, fellows receive access to ISPA's extensive network of international arts professionals with a complimentary ISPA membership, annual congress event registration, travel subsidies and a mentorship opportunity with an ISPA member.
The International Society for the Performing Arts (ISPA) is a global network of more than 500 leaders in the performing arts, with representation from more than 185 cities and many diverse regions around the world.
In 2011, ISPA noticed growth in its Canadian membership, which had become the second largest group by region in the network. Even with this growth, Canada’s presence did not reflect the full diversity and scale of Canada’s performing arts market.
The Canada Council for the Arts recognized this as an important opportunity, and partnered with ISPA to create a new fellowship program. This partnership paved the way for other countries to build similar programs, and today the ISPA also has fellowship programs with Australia, Denmark, England, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Quebec, Scotland, Singapore, and Sweden.
Today the program continues to thrive as the Canada Council has re-launched its partnership with ISPA by sponsoring a new group of fellows for 2019-2021 and growing the cohort to better support Indigenous arts leaders.
