Grant helps circus expand and innovate in Newfoundland and Labrador
From 2017 to 2020, Wonderbolt Circus will bring innovative new shows to audiences in Newfoundland and Labrador. As the circus attracts a following, it is introducing more ambitious storytelling concepts.
Original theatrical circus performances for young audiences
Wonderbolt Circus is creating, developing and producing original circus and movement theatre and bringing it to the widest possible audiences, with a special emphasis on youth. It is also focusing on teaching the physical arts through workshops and activities designed to develop the next generation of circus artists.
Engaging Indigenous communities in performance
Wonderbolt has worked with the Innu in Labrador for over a decade on a series of projects. It reaches out to the most isolated and disadvantaged members of the region. The Canada Council of the Arts grant is helping Wonderbolt Circus to continue these efforts, which include workshops for hearing- and sight-impaired children. Working with the communities of Nunatsiavut along the north coast of Labrador will be a core element of Wonderbolt’s work over the three seasons of funding.
