Canada Council for the Art’s (Council) websites automatically collect non-personally identifiable information from you when you visit them.
This includes:
- your Internet Protocol (IP) address and
- information collected using cookies
The Council aggregates this information about your visit with those of other visitors. We also use this aggregate information for research and analytical purposes to better understand how people are using our website.
This information helps us provide you with:
- a continually improving online experience
- ease and speed of navigation to help you find the services and information you need
Web analytics
Web analytics is the collection, analysis, measurement, and reporting on how people use web pages. The Council uses analytics to improve its website. Analytics are not used to collect personal information.
The Council uses web analytics for information about:
- the originating IP address
- the date and time of the request
- the type of browser used
- the page(s) visited
Digital markers (including cookies)
A digital marker is a resource created by the visitors’ browser to remember certain pieces of information for the Web server to reference during the same or subsequent visit to the website. Examples of digital markers are “cookies” or HTML5 web storage. Digital markers enable websites to detect prior visits and track visitor behavior, ensuring visitors find what they are looking for.
The Council uses sessional or persistent digital markers on portions of its website. The digital markers used do not allow the Council to identify individuals.

Protecting the Security of the Council Websites
The Council employs software programs to monitor network traffic to identify unauthorized attempts to upload or change information, or otherwise cause damage. This software receives and records the IP address of the computer that has contacted our website, the date and time of the visit and the pages visited. The Council makes no attempt to link these addresses with the identity of individuals visiting our site unless an attempt to damage the site has been detected.
Information collected may be used for network security related statistical purposes, audit, evaluation, research, planning and reporting and is included in the Personal Information Bank [ Security Incidents (PSU 939) ].
The Council uses cloud services that are ISO/IEC 27001 as a security standard for cloud services.
Linking to Websites not belonging to the Canada Council for the Arts
Links to websites not under the control of the Council, including those to our social media accounts, are provided solely for the convenience of our website visitors. The Council is not responsible for the accuracy, currency, or reliability of the content of such websites. The Council does not offer any guarantee in that regard and is not responsible for the information found through these links, nor does it endorse third-party sites and their content.
Visitors should be aware that the information offered on sites linked to from the Council web properties is not subject to the Privacy Act or the Official Languages Act and may not be accessible to persons with disabilities. The information offered may be available only in the language(s) used by the sites in question. With respect to privacy, visitors should research the privacy policies of these websites before providing personal information.
Use of Social Media
The Council’s use of social media serves as an extension of its presence on the web. In cases where services are provided by organizations outside of the Council, such as social media platforms, search or mobile applications, IP addresses may be recorded by the third-party service provider.
Social media account(s) are public and are not hosted on the Council servers. Users who choose to interact with us via social media should read the terms of service and privacy policies of these third-party service providers and those of any applications you use to access them.
