Exhibition of Photos by Risa Horowitz in Longyearbyen, Norway
In the Svalbard archipelago’s capital, in northern Norway, Risa Horowitz has created and presented a body of photo documentary work centred on the midnight sun.
Travelling abroad, shining abroad
Risa Horowitz first visited Svalbard in 2017 as part of a creative residency, with the summer solstice in the arctic circle as a theme. In the mining town of Longyearbyen, she devoted her time to a photography study of the movement of the sun. She completed the work in a Saskatchewan studio, after which she was invited to present the results of her work at the Svalbard gallery as part of the 2018 KunstPause festival.
A long-lasting artistic relationship with Norway
Risa Horowitz’s Norwegian art project lasted nearly three years and may still bear fruit. Horowitz took advantage of her last stay in Longyearbyen to meet many local artists and representatives of various organizations, which opened the door to potential collaborations.
