Contemporary Dance Festival Rocks Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia
The Festival of Dance Annapolis Royal (FODAR) is a dance festival that takes place annually in the historic, rural community of Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, population 490.
Nova Scotia’s only contemporary dance festival
The festival is the only one of its kind in Nova Scotia and the main professional dance activity in the province outside Halifax. It has a reputation for bringing contemporary dance to a mostly rural area through carefully curated programs that blend revivals of past classics with today’s dance practices. Shows are presented in the century-old King’s Theatre, and in 2019 the festival celebrated its fifth anniversary.
Festival offers accessible, diverse programming
FODAR 2019 included both Indigenous and contemporary work from Toronto, Halifax and Montréal, as well as a flamenco workshop for the public, a community procession dance, and post-show meet-and-greets. These activities continued the festival’s tradition of offering a wide range of accessible, diverse dance works that explore a range of themes for audiences.
