Saskatoon Festival Promotes Canadian Writers
Every September, The Word on the Street Saskatoon celebrates the written word and champions literacy at a one-day indoor/outdoor event.
Inspiring pride in writing from Canada
The Word on the Street Saskatoon is an annual literary festival that supports Canadian literature. It encourages audiences to interact with writers and develop a deeper understanding of the literary arts and surrounding issues, and it strives to inspire a sense of pride in Canadian writing and authors by showcasing a wide range of voices. The free, accessible event includes readings, presentations, panel discussions, workshops, and musical entertainment.
Growing the festival with help from the Canada Council
Along with providing opportunities for writers and audiences to connect, The Word on the Street increases awareness of local authors, storytellers, and literacy organizations. It also increases the general public’s interest in books, reading, and literacy. Moreover, it supports tourism in Saskatoon—more than a third of the festival’s attendees travel more than 40 km to attend. In 2017, the festival used the Council’s support to expand from a one-day to a multi-day event, move its location from the public library to the city’s Broadway Avenue, increase attendance by 20%, and expand its Indigenous component.
